Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek

The most popular and more frequently used route for the famous Everest Base Camp trek is via a flight to Lukla from Kathmandu. With the establishment of the Airport in Lukla, this route is the most commonly used one both by the foreigners and domestic tourists alike. However, before the Airport in Lukla came into use, Jiri used to be the starting point of the Everest Base Camp Trek. Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek is different in that the trekkers have to trek until Lukla from Jiri. Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek can be almost ideal trekking trail for those who want to climb all the way to the Base Camp by foot. Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek is also known as Bhairav Kunda Trek. The trek is thrilling but at the same time it can also be quite physically draining as it demands continuous trekking for over two weeks. With the operation of regular flights from Kathmandu to Lukla, these days many trekkers take a 30-minute flight to Lukla and then start their expedition from there. However, for the real adventure seekers, Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek is still one of the popular trekking destinations in Nepal.

Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek starts with 8-hour (188km) drive to Jiri, a small picturesque town located in Dolakha district. Jiri is located at an altitude of 1900m and it is starting point of the trek. Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek follows the traditional route used in the earlier days by those for the Everest expedition. The route was used commonly before the Lukla Airport started regular flights from Kathmandu. Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek, however, provides the excellent opportunity for the trekkers to know about the Sherpa people, their culture, the villages and their lifestyle. There are plenty of hotels and lodges on the way, catering for the trekkers. As they mostly live in the Himalayan region, Sherpas are also commonly known as the ‘peoples of the Himalaya’.
It takes around 6-7 days in average to reach Namche Bazaar from Jiri. On the way you will be stopping at the guesthouses and hotels for the overnight stay. This provides a wonderful opportunity to mingle with the Sherpa people and know their culture. Another good aspect of the Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek is that it itself provides gradual acclimatization to the higher altitude. From Namche, we follow the main Everest Base Camp trail up until the base camp.
